Believe it or not, I am actually enjoying the interview process. I love flying. I love the excuse to not go into work (even if the hours are made up later). I love going new places. I actually love the questions I am being asked. And I love the phrase “Welcome to ___.”

As I shared earlier, applying to med school is definitely not the easiest (and rightly so) or the cheapest (although it would be nice if it were) process. And I go through it with eyes wide open to the fact that I may not get in. However, I always just assumed myself – and everyone else – would garner aat least one interview after submitting secondaries.

Not so. There is a girl who is not a member of my lab, but her lab shares some space with mine. She is nice, pretty and went to Georgetown. Did Red Cross & Cancer Center work. And while I cannot vouch for her grades or MCATs, I’m going to guess they were decent. In any case, she is the type of person that at least on the surface, you would consider being a doctor.

Here’s the thing – she has not received one interview invitation. Both UA campuses put her on a waitlist – as did University of Maryland in her home state. And she has not received any invitations from any other institutions.

So while it is expensive to fly out, while it is time consuming, while I make up more work than I miss, I have a chance. I am being given a chance to go the next level and show why as a person I should be a doctor. A chance that this person is not being given. So I will appreciate every question, every flight, every trip. No matter how great or not so great I do, or how great or not so great the school is. Because I should be thrilled to just be getting interviews.

So for the first time, I am going to try to tackle National Blog Posting Month. I am planning on taking advantage of this time to re-take up my love for photography and relearn/improve my skills as I share some photos of fall in DC and the onset of my first winter ever. :)
I’ll also be sharing some more stories about the med-school application process and sprinkle in some DC experiences.

NaBloPoMo (and Novermber) Away!
